The Fort Teremba Museum: the history of the prison in New Caledonia

The Fort Teremba, a former penitentiary in New Caledonia, located in the town of Moindou, 1h30 from Nouméa, invites you to visit its museum dedicated to the prison, the Kanak uprising and the conservation of the site.

On the first floor of the main building, a former military residence, the permanent exhibition, devoted to the New Caledonia prison, retraces the history of the Fort and the daily life of the time. Signs specially designed for children make this tour perfect for families. This dynamic presentation (interactive terminals, audio-video animations, models, characters) is aimed at all audiences from the age of 7.

Then enter the prison and its cells reconstituted using models. You will discover the tragic destiny of several convicts: incorrigible, escapees, writers, condemned to death... This place of suffering also evokes, with the help of engravings, maps, and a chronological frieze in comic book form, this place of suffering also evokes, using engravings, maps, and a chronological frieze in comic book form, this place of suffering also evokes, using engravings, maps, and a chronological frieze in comic book form, this place of suffering also evokes, with the help of engravings, maps, and a chronological frieze in comic book form, this place of suffering also evokes, using engravings, maps, and a chronological frieze in comic book form.

Your visit will continue on the ground floor of the blockhouse. There you will find striking photos and explanations of the main stages of the preservation and rehabilitation of the site carried out, since 1984, by the volunteers of theMarguerite Association with the support of the institutions.

By walking through the various buildings of the Fort Teremba, it is easy to imagine the organization of the penitentiary at the time of the penitentiary.

One Tour circuit marked, outside the Fort, allows for an overview of the restored or consolidated buildings still present.

You can explore the museum freely or accompanied by one of our guides who will give you numerous anecdotes about the daily life of inmates in the penitentiary but also about daily life in the “bush”, at that time.
